Digital Smile Design, or DSD, supports this discussion with a visual preview. We look at the teeth in the context of your face and discuss which changes might suit your wishes and the findings. This forms a basis for further planning.
Dr. med. dent. Niusha Barahmand Pour is listed in the official Digital Smile Design profile with the further training title “DSD Master”. This is the provider's training designation, not an academic master's degree. In our Cologne practice, she combines digital analysis with a personal consultation.

From conversation to design
The useful records and appointments depend on your starting situation. Planning may include these steps:
We discuss your wishes and examine teeth, gums and your bite. Existing restorations and possible preliminary treatment are part of this decision. You learn which approaches may be suitable and where their limits lie.
Photographs, videos where appropriate, and an intraoral scan document your face, smile line and teeth. We can view possible changes in shape and proportions together in the digital preview. Your feedback is part of this process.
Where suitable, a mock-up may be added: a temporary representation of the planned tooth shape in the mouth. This lets us discuss the design while you smile and speak. We first establish whether it would be useful for you and possible without preparing the teeth.
We consider your wishes, findings and design together. Only then do the suitable treatment steps, their sequence and the cost plan follow. A smaller change or choosing no treatment can also be an appropriate decision.
What the preview tells us
A simulation shows a possible design. It does not yet predict that every step shown is medically appropriate or can be carried out exactly as displayed.
Treatment needs to account for tooth substance, gums and function, among other factors. This may lead to changes in an initial design. A mock-up also does not fully represent the material and appearance of the eventual restoration.
We use the preview to understand your expectations and explain decisions. It is not a guarantee of a particular result.
The treatment behind the plan
DSD is a method of analysis and communication. The treatment that follows remains an individual decision.
If tooth shape and surface are to be changed, Veneers or, for smaller corrections, composite bonding may be discussed. If tooth alignment is the main concern, we assess whether correction with aligners is an option.
For a change in colour, an initial consultation about Teeth whitening may be useful. When planning crowns and bridges, designing in harmony with the face may also play a role.
Sometimes the journey involves several of these steps. We explain why a particular sequence is recommended and which alternatives exist. You can find an initial overview under aesthetic dentistry.
Time & costs
The extent of diagnostics and planning depends on the change you are considering. A single tooth raises different questions from treatment with several consecutive steps. There is therefore no standard duration for “DSD treatment”.
The German dental fee schedule (GOZ) applies to private planning and treatment services. Before starting, you receive an individual treatment and cost plan. It distinguishes planning services from subsequent treatment. Purely cosmetic services requested by you and their fees are agreed in writing in advance. Use the plan to clarify reimbursement with your insurer before starting.

The planning required depends on the findings and the extent of the restoration. DSD can help with aesthetic questions. We discuss during the examination whether a digital preview and a mock-up would be useful in your case.
A simulation is a visual preview. A mock-up temporarily represents a planned tooth shape in the mouth. It can add to the assessment, but is not suitable for every situation and does not replace the eventual restoration.
Discussion, photographs and a digital scan do not require removal of tooth substance. Whether and what preparation would be needed at a later treatment stage depends on the restoration chosen. We clarify this with you before that step begins.
The consultation helps you make a decision. You can take time to weigh up the proposed approach and costs. We agree with you which diagnostic or planning services you would like to commission; any further treatment is discussed separately.
