Dentistry · Overview
All services. From prevention to preserving teeth.
You come to us with a concern. Together, we establish what lies behind it, which treatment may be suitable and what the next steps could look like.
Regular preventive care
Dental check-up.
Just here for a check-up.
Would you like to have your teeth checked, even if you have no symptoms? You are welcome to visit us for a routine check-up.
What does a check-up involve?
We examine your teeth, gums and mouth and check existing fillings and dental restorations. We discuss your questions and any changes in your health that are relevant to the examination.
We then explain the findings and discuss whether further examinations or treatment would be appropriate and when your next check-up is due.
A dental check-up and professional teeth cleaning are different services. We discuss with you whether a cleaning could usefully complement your preventive care.
How often should I have a check-up?
Twice a year, roughly every six months, is a usual check-up schedule. We tailor the interval to your oral health. Please contact us sooner if you have symptoms.
Remember your dental bonus booklet.
For people with German statutory health insurance, regular records matter: from age 18, the bonus requires at least one check-up per calendar year. For 12- to 17-year-olds, a preventive examination is recorded in each half of the calendar year.
Try not to miss a year. Bring your bonus booklet to your check-up and remember to have the visit recorded, even if your teeth are not causing any problems.
A benefit if you need dental restorations.
With regular dental care and an unbroken record of check-ups, the fixed statutory health insurance subsidy increases from 60 per cent to 70 per cent after five years and to 75 per cent after ten years. The years before the year of treatment are counted.
These percentages apply to the nationally defined costs of the relevant standard treatment. They do not mean that the same share of your entire bill is reimbursed, for example if you choose a more elaborate restoration.
What if a stamp is missing?
If the examination took place and is documented in your patient record, the practice you attended can add the entry later.

Understanding first
What your teeth need
For us, dentistry starts with listening and an examination. A sensitive tooth, bleeding gums or an old filling can raise very different questions. You do not need to know the cause before your appointment.
At SMILE meets DESIGN in Cologne, we include existing restorations, your oral care and health considerations in the planning. We explain the findings and compare the options — including what they involve, their limitations and aftercare.
Our overview helps you find your way. The right treatment follows from your individual situation.

Your concern
Where would you like to start?
I would like to preserve my teeth well.
Check-ups and oral care tailored to you are the starting point. Professional dental cleaning could complement your care. Its scope and intervals depend on your needs.
My gums bleed or are receding.
Changes like these should be examined. Periodontal care focuses on the gums and the support for teeth — from early detection to treatment and long-term care.
A tooth hurts or is damaged.
We assess whether a filling is enough, a ceramic restoration is an option or the inside of the tooth needs treatment. Root canal treatment may offer a way to preserve the tooth.
A filling or dental prosthesis no longer fits.
Before replacement, we check the condition and function. Depending on the findings, a repair, Inlays or Restorative dentistry may be options. Even with old amalgam fillings, the findings guide the decision.
I have a missing tooth.
We discuss options for Restorative dentistry and assess whether Dental implants could provide a suitable foundation. The remaining teeth, bone and your health situation help determine the plan.
Even the appointment worries me.
You are welcome to talk about your fear of treatment — even if it has been a long time since your last visit. On our page about managing dental anxiety, you can learn how we discuss the starting point and next steps with you.
Health, function, aesthetics
A plan
that fits together
When several treatments are needed, their sequence also matters. Inflammation, teeth that can be preserved and a functioning bite are as much a part of this as your wishes for their appearance.
Shape, colour or alignment?
For these concerns, our aesthetic dentistry overview provides information about veneers, aligners, whitening and digital planning. We assess the clinical requirements with you.
Before treatment begins, we discuss which steps are needed, what can wait and what alternatives exist.

What does treatment cost?
That depends on the findings and planned extent. We distinguish between services covered by German statutory health insurance, any additional costs and private services under the German dental fee schedule (GOZ). Before privately agreed treatment, you receive written cost information or a treatment and cost plan. Use these documents to clarify reimbursement with your insurer beforehand.
Before your appointment
Frequently asked questions
Do I already need to know which treatment I need?
No. Describe your concern when arranging the appointment. At the visit, we examine the situation and discuss the next steps. Existing X-rays or treatment records may be helpful.
Can I get a second opinion?
You can bring an existing treatment plan. We discuss your questions and assess which additional findings are needed for an opinion.
What should I do about acute symptoms?
Please call us and describe your symptoms rather than waiting for a routine consultation. Outside opening hours, the emergency dental service can help. Breathing or swallowing difficulties require immediate medical help.
What should I tell you before the appointment?
Tell us about medicines you take regularly, allergies, relevant conditions and pregnancy. If you are anxious about treatment, you are welcome to say so when booking.
Will I receive treatment at the first appointment?
That depends on your concern and the findings. An acute situation may require a different approach from comprehensive planning. We explain the proposed steps before we start.
