What is a tooth socket?

An alveolus is the bony socket in the jaw containing a tooth root. Fibrous tissue between the root and socket wall holds the tooth in place. After extraction, the empty socket is initially a wound.

A shaped socket

Its shape follows the root. Multi-rooted teeth have corresponding divisions; the socket is not a space inside the tooth.

02 / 03

After extraction

A blood clot forms in the socket as part of healing. Do not pick it out, suck at it or repeatedly touch it.

The wound changes as it heals. Increasing severe pain, persistent bleeding or substantial swelling needs telephone assessment.

At a glance

When is it used?

In tooth anatomy, trauma or extraction.

What protects healing?

Leave the clot undisturbed and follow individual aftercare advice.

When should I call?

For persistent bleeding, increasing severe pain or swelling.

Often confused

Socket or dry socket?

A socket is normal anatomy. Dry socket describes a painful healing complication after extraction.

Quick answers
Is the socket the root canal?

No. The canal is inside the tooth; the socket lies in the jaw around the root.

Must the hole close immediately?

No. Healing takes time and varies. Follow the individual aftercare advice; image searches do not replace review.

Can I remove material from the wound?

Do not scrape or probe the wound with objects. Ask the treating practice if unsure.
