What does the tray do during tooth whitening?

A whitening tray is a fitted plastic carrier for a whitening product. During dentist-guided home whitening it holds the planned gel against tooth surfaces. The tray alone does not whiten teeth. Fit, product, amount and wearing time need to work together.

Check the fit

The tray and its edge should fit the dental arch. Pressure spots or escaping gel are reasons to have its use reviewed.

02 / 03

Follow the instructions

Use only the product and instructions discussed for it. More gel or longer wear is not a shortcut to a safe result.

Monitor tolerance

Sensitivity or gum irritation may occur. Pause and seek advice; fillings and crowns do not whiten with the teeth.

At a glance

Does the tray whiten by itself?

No, it is a carrier.

Interchangeable with any tray?

No.

If irritation occurs?

Pause and contact the dental team.

Often confused

Whitening tray, aligner and bite splint

A whitening tray carries a product. An aligner moves teeth, while a bite splint changes contacts or protects surfaces. A similar clear appearance does not make them interchangeable.

Quick answers
Can I use an aligner instead?

Not without specific dental assessment. Design, material and intended use may differ.

How long should I wear it?

That depends on the product and plan. A general number of hours cannot replace your instructions.

Will every tooth become equally white?

No. Starting colour, discoloration and existing restorations limit the result; a particular shade change is not promised.
