What is personalised prevention for children and teenagers?

Individual prevention adapts oral care to the person. In German statutory insurance, the named benefit particularly concerns children from their 6th birthday until before their 18th: assessing hygiene and gums, discussing caries risk and practising age-appropriate cleaning. Suitable fluoride measures and fissure sealing may be included.

Often confused

Individual and group prevention

Individual prevention focuses on one child in the practice. School or nursery programmes complement it but do not replace an individual examination.

Quick answers
What is the statutory age range?

From the 6th birthday until before the 18th. The examination under § 22 SGB V is provided once per calendar half-year.

Is it the same as professional cleaning?

No. Individual prevention particularly includes assessment, education and instruction; professional cleaning is a different service.

Are all teeth sealed?

No. The statutory provision concerns fissures of permanent molars; suitability and need are assessed for the tooth.
