How can sleep breathing be tested at home?

Respiratory polygraphy records overnight signals such as airflow, breathing effort, oxygen saturation and pulse. It may form part of medical sleep-apnoea assessment. Unlike polysomnography, it usually does not measure sleep stages.

Understand the equipment

The team explains the sensors and their use. Follow the instructions for the particular device.

02 / 03

Record overnight

Several signals are interpreted together. A single reading or snoring recording cannot establish the diagnosis.

Discuss the report

Unclear, technically inadequate or apparently normal results despite symptoms may require further testing.

Often confused

Polygraphy versus polysomnography

Polysomnography also records signals used to assess sleep, such as brain activity.

Quick answers
Is a smartwatch equivalent?

No. A consumer watch does not replace a medically arranged test.

Does a normal result always exclude apnoea?

No. Symptoms and recording quality influence further assessment.

Can I then choose a splint myself?

No. Medical findings and dental suitability both matter.
