What does a sleep laboratory measure?

Polysomnography records several body functions during sleep. Along with breathing and oxygen saturation, it includes brain activity, eye movements and muscle activity. These help assess sleep and possible disorders.

Testing versus treatment

Assessment establishes findings; subsequent care is decided separately.

Quick answers
Does it hurt?

The usual test records signals through external sensors. Unfamiliar wires can be uncomfortable; discuss concerns beforehand.

What should I report beforehand?

Discuss previous reports, medicines and sleep concerns. Do not stop medication on your own.

Why after a home test?

More detailed testing may be needed when questions remain or other sleep disorders are suspected.
