Why is the tissue beneath a denture red?

Denture stomatitis is inflammation of the lining covered by a removable denture. Redness often affects the palate and may cause little discomfort. Denture deposits, yeasts, fit and wearing habits can contribute. Examination identifies the relevant factors.

Beneath the base

The affected lining is in contact with the denture base. Redness alone does not prove a yeast infection or material allergy.

02 / 03

Assess contributing factors

Assessment considers the tissues, denture fit, cleaning and wearing habits. Absence of pain does not rule out inflammation.

Coordinate care

Suitable cleaning, periods without the denture and assessment of its fit support care. Findings determine whether medication is also needed.

Often confused

A pressure sore is not the same condition

A pressure sore is usually a local mechanical problem. Widespread inflammation beneath a base may have different or several causes.

Quick answers
Does it always hurt?

No. The inflammation may cause little or no discomfort.

Is antifungal medication enough?

Not always. Deposits, poor fit or wearing habits may need attention to reduce recurrence.

Which cleaning product is suitable?

It depends on the materials. Metal, acrylic and soft linings do not tolerate every product; ask for material-specific advice.

For a personal discussion

Editorially suggested question to discuss with Dr Niusha Barahmand Pour:

How do fit, cleaning and denture-free periods apply to me?

Redness, burning or altered fit can be assessed together with the denture.
