Snoring: causes, warning signs and helpful next steps
Snoring happens when airflow makes soft tissues vibrate in a narrowed upper airway. What helps depends on the cause. Gasping during sleep, observed pauses in breathing or unusual daytime sleepiness are reasons to seek medical assessment. Even without these signs, support is worthwhile when sleep or life together is affected. Loudness alone does not tell you whether sleep apnoea is present. This guide is for adults.

Why do people snore?
Muscles relax during sleep. This can change the space available for breathing around the tongue, soft palate and other tissues. Airflow through a narrower area can make tissues vibrate. The source of the sound differs between people, so a single tip or an off-the-shelf aid is not automatically suitable for everyone.
Restricted nasal breathing, individual jaw and throat anatomy, alcohol in the evening or sleeping on the back can play a role. Body weight and certain medicines can also affect breathing during sleep. This does not mean snoring is always self-inflicted or will disappear after one change. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.

Snoring and sleep apnoea are not the same
In obstructive sleep apnoea, the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep. Sleep can be interrupted without the person remembering it in the morning. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnoea. Equally, a quiet night or the absence of observations does not reliably rule out a breathing disorder.
A sound recording or snoring app may support a conversation, but does not reliably measure everything needed for a diagnosis. Medical assessment is what matters; appropriate sleep testing is arranged according to the findings. An app score should not decide whether a consultation is needed.

These observations deserve medical assessment
Observed pauses in breathing, repeated gasping or choking during sleep and marked daytime sleepiness are particularly important. Morning headaches and concentration problems can occur too, but are not specific to sleep apnoea. Describe what is happening without assigning yourself a diagnosis.
If you are struggling to stay awake while driving, do not continue driving and seek timely medical advice. Severe acute breathlessness while awake is different: do not wait for a snoring appointment. Call 112 for this emergency.

When snoring leaves both people exhausted
Interrupted sleep can seriously affect the person sharing the bed. A daytime conversation is usually more useful than arguing in the middle of a difficult night. Rather than blame, record observations and needs: “I keep waking up” or “I have noticed pauses in your breathing and would like us to get them checked.”
Temporarily sleeping separately may offer practical relief for a couple, but it does not replace assessment of concerning breathing. Nobody needs to monitor an entire night. Observations can be discussed without pressure and with agreement; secret recordings are not necessary.

Five notes that can help at the appointment
A short overview is enough. Its purpose is to organise what you remember, not to act as a self-test. A trusted person can add their observations if appropriate.
- When did the snoring start, and how often is it noticed?
- Have there been observed pauses, gasping or unusual daytime sleepiness?
- Is the nose often blocked, and does snoring change with sleeping position?
- Which medicines are being taken, and is alcohol consumed in the evening?
- What has already been assessed or tried, and what is the main personal goal?

What helps with snoring, and what is appropriate?
Some people benefit from changes such as less alcohol in the evening or a different sleeping position. Weight loss may be helpful where excess weight is a factor. Persistent difficulty breathing through the nose needs medical assessment. These measures do not replace investigation or necessary treatment of suspected or established sleep apnoea.
A custom-made snoring appliance can be an option for suitable adults. Suitability depends both on sleep-related findings and on the teeth and jaw function. Our treatment page explains the dental part of this pathway. With breathing pauses or marked daytime sleepiness, medical assessment comes first.

Common questions
Is quiet snoring automatically harmless?
No. Loudness alone cannot reliably assess breathing disturbances. Observed pauses and daytime symptoms are important reasons for a consultation.

Can a snoring app diagnose the problem?
It may add observations, but does not replace medical assessment or appropriate sleep testing. An apparently normal recording does not rule out sleep apnoea.

Does my partner need to attend the appointment?
It is not a requirement. Observations shared voluntarily can help. A short written list is also a useful starting point.
