What does a tooth contact that feels too early mean?

A premature contact occurs earlier than intended during a particular jaw-closing or movement path. Its relevance depends on contact findings and symptoms. Feeling that a bite is high does not by itself prove a mechanical problem.

Examine the contact sequence

Teeth meet differently at different jaw positions. Marking materials help assess these contacts.

02 / 03

Compare sensation and findings

A new contact may be noticed after a filling. Other factors may also change the perception of the bite.

Treat a defined finding

Adjustment requires a clear reason. Repeated untargeted grinding is not a general treatment for jaw pain.

Often confused

Contact versus bite perception

An observed contact and the personal sensation are different. Both deserve assessment together.

Quick answers
Should I ignore a high filling?

Contact the practice for a check if the bite feels clearly different or chewing hurts after treatment.

Does every early contact cause TMD?

No. A contact alone cannot establish the cause of TMD.

Can I file it down myself?

No. This can irreversibly damage tooth tissue and restorations.

Editorially suggested question to discuss with Dr Niusha Barahmand Pour:

Does the high contact I feel match an objective finding?

A bite that has changed after treatment can be checked.
