What does a functional orthodontic appliance do?

Functional orthodontic appliances influence the interaction of tooth position, jaw posture and muscles. They are mainly used during growth. Their suitability depends on the bite, growth stage and cooperation.

Working together

Some appliances guide the lower jaw into a planned position during closure. This does not apply to every child with crooked teeth.

02 / 03

Wear and review

Removable appliances depend on the agreed wear routine. Wear times and adjustments are prescribed individually.

Further treatment

Further tooth alignment may be needed afterwards. Oral care and dental check-ups remain important throughout treatment.

Often confused

Using growth without promising it

The appliance guarantees neither a particular amount of jaw growth nor a particular facial profile.

Quick answers
Is this the same as an aligner?

No. Its mechanism differs from a series of clear tooth-moving trays.

Does it also work in adults?

Growth-related aims cannot simply be transferred after growth has finished. Adult findings require different planning.

Does it rule out fixed braces later?

That cannot be promised. Another treatment phase may be part of the plan.

For a personal discussion

Editorially suggested question to discuss with Dr Niusha Barahmand Pour:

Would this bite benefit from an orthodontic assessment?

An examination can clarify whether an orthodontic assessment of jaw development would be useful.
