Why is fluid used during root canal treatment?

Irrigating solutions help reduce tissue remnants, biofilm and microorganisms within the root canal system. They complement instruments because canals have small branches and irregular surfaces.

01 / 03

More than a smooth tube

A file cannot contact every recess. Fluids therefore form part of canal cleaning.

02 / 03

Controlled use inside the tooth

The clinical team selects the solution, method and protective measures for the findings. Fluid delivery must stay controlled.

03 / 03

No sterility guarantee

Cleaning aims to reduce microbial load. Canal filling and restoration of the tooth remain important afterwards.

Purpose?

Reduce microbes and tissue remnants.

Who applies it?

The dental treatment team.

At home?

Do not use endodontic irrigants yourself.

Often confused

Canal irrigation versus mouth rinse

Irrigation reaches an opened tooth. An everyday mouth rinse does not clean its internal canal system.

Quick answers
Is this ordinary mouthwash?

No. Endodontic irrigants are professionally applied inside an isolated tooth, not used for home treatment.

Is one solution always used?

No. Solutions perform different tasks. Their selection and sequence require clinical decisions.

Does it remove every bacterium?

Complete sterility cannot be promised. The aim is effective reduction alongside the other treatment stages.

Knowledge questionWhy irrigate as well as file?

For learning, not for assessing personal symptoms. Your answer is not stored or sent.

  1. Not every canal surface is mechanically accessible.
  2. To whiten the crown.
  3. To avoid any filling.
