Does the tooth root stay in place?

Root canal treatment removes diseased tissue from inside a tooth. The root canals are cleaned, disinfected and filled. The tooth root itself generally remains in place. The aim is to keep a restorable tooth in use.

Treatment is inside the tooth

The root canals contain pulp with nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue becomes severely inflamed or dies, root canal treatment may be needed.

02 / 03

The root stays in the jaw

Diseased tissue is removed. The canals are prepared and disinfected. Treatment takes place inside them; the root is not pulled out.

03 / 03

The canals and tooth are sealed

The cleaned canals receive a root filling. The tooth then needs a well-sealed restoration and, depending on remaining tissue, possibly a crown. Checks are part of follow-up.

At a glance

What is treated inside the tooth?

The inside of the root canals is treated; the root is not removed. Diseased tissue is taken out with the aim of keeping a restorable tooth in use.

When might it be needed?

Severe inflammation or dead pulp tissue can make treatment necessary. Toothache alone does not decide this; an examination and, where appropriate, X-rays clarify the findings.

What follows cleaning and disinfection?

The canals are filled, followed by a well-sealed restoration of the tooth. A crown may be needed depending on the remaining tissue; checks monitor the subsequent course.

Often confused

Root canal treatment or root-end surgery?

Root canal treatment takes place within the canal system. Root-end surgery is a surgical procedure at the root tip. The terms do not mean the same thing.

Quick answers
Does root canal treatment remove the root?

No. The root remains. In root-end surgery, by contrast, a small part of the root tip is surgically removed; that is a different procedure.

Does every toothache need root canal treatment?

No. Pain can have various causes. An examination and, where appropriate, X-rays help establish whether the inside of the tooth needs treatment.

Can the tooth cause symptoms again afterwards?

Yes. Symptoms or a new infection are possible. Persistent pain or swelling should be assessed by a dentist.

A question to discuss with Dr. med. dent. Niusha Barahmand Pour:

How can my tooth be preserved, and what restoration will it need after root canal treatment?

Preserving teeth is part of her treatment planning. Her professional training includes a curriculum in endodontics.

We assess the findings to establish whether root canal treatment is an option and which steps would be needed.

Pulp
Pulp containing connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves inside the tooth crown and roots.
Canal preparation
Cleaning and shaping the root canal system as part of treatment.
Root canal filling
Material used to seal the prepared canals; not to be confused with the restoration on the outside of the tooth.

Know the difference

A root canal filling seals the inside of the tooth. The subsequent coronal restoration seals and stabilises the externally accessible part of the tooth.

Knowledge questionWhich step is part of root canal treatment?

This question supports learning. It does not assess personal symptoms.

  1. Surgically cutting off the root tip.
  2. Cleaning and filling the internal canal system.
  3. Removing the tooth together with its roots.
Show answer and explanation

Cleaning and filling the internal canal system.

Root canal treatment addresses the inside of the tooth. Root-end surgery and extraction are different procedures.
