What does it show?
Clinically measured attachment loss.
Clinical attachment loss describes how far the probed tissue attachment has shifted relative to a fixed reference on the tooth, usually the cementoenamel junction. This finding helps assess loss of tooth-supporting tissues.

The cementoenamel junction marks the transition between crown and root. Unlike the gum edge, it does not shift with swelling.
Recession may coexist with attachment loss despite a shallow pocket. Swelling may produce a deeper pocket without equivalent attachment loss.
Attachment loss may relate to periodontitis, but other causes need consideration. Probing and radiographs complement one another rather than measure the same thing.

Both may be expressed in millimetres but start from different reference points. Their values are not interchangeable.
No. It is a clinical attachment measurement. Bone is assessed separately, often using radiographs.
Yes. Inflammation may be controlled while support remains reduced. Previous disease still affects maintenance needs.
No. History and combined findings matter. One reading initially describes the examined state.
Editorially suggested question to discuss with Dr Niusha Barahmand Pour:
How do pocket depth, recession and attachment loss differ in my case?
Technical measurements can be explained using your own findings.
