Why might bone augmentation be needed before an implant?

Bone augmentation covers procedures intended to increase jawbone volume. It may be relevant when there is not enough bone to support the planned implant position. It is not required in every case.

Available bone matters

The height, width and shape of the existing bone are assessed for the implant position. Augmentation is considered only when the situation warrants it.

Materials support the process

Depending on the procedure, a graft may use your own bone or substitute materials. They support bone formation; they are not instantly mature natural bone.

Healing is a separate stage

Augmentation and implant placement may be separate or combined. Healing, risks and the timing of loading are planned individually.

At a glance

What is being augmented?

Bone volume for the planned restoration, for example at a narrow ridge.

Who might need it?

People whose examination and necessary imaging show limited bone volume.

What follows the procedure?

Reviews and an individually planned healing period. Suitability for implant placement or loading is then reassessed.

Often confused

Bone augmentation or sinus lift?

Bone augmentation is the broader term. A sinus lift is a specific procedure in the back of the upper jaw beneath the maxillary sinus.

Quick answers
Does every implant need bone augmentation?

No. The available bone and the planned restoration determine whether it is relevant.

Which materials are available?

Your own bone and materials of human, animal or synthetic origin. The choice and origin are explained before the procedure.

Is success certain?

No. Infection, wound problems or inadequate bone gain can occur, among other complications. Individual risks need discussion.

At the practice

For your consultation

A question to discuss with Dr. med. dent. Niusha Barahmand Pour:

How much bone is available, and what does that mean for my replacement teeth?

At the practice, the findings, personal wishes and possible next steps are discussed through a consultation and examination.

When bone volume is limited, the findings and possible next steps can be discussed.

Augmentation
Increasing tissue or bone volume.
Autogenous bone
Bone taken from the same person.
Bone substitute
Material that supports bone formation in ways that depend on its properties.

Placing a material and biological bone formation are different stages.

Knowledge questionWhen might bone augmentation be discussed?

This question supports learning. It does not assess personal symptoms.

  1. Before every implant as a rule.
  2. When there is not enough bone for the planned position.
  3. Only when a tooth is discoloured.
Show answer and explanation

When there is not enough bone for the planned position.

The need depends on anatomy and the restoration plan, not simply on wanting an implant.
