Is a mini implant simply a smaller conventional implant?

Mini implant is used for different small implants. In prosthetic care it usually means a very narrow implant, for example to help stabilise a removable denture in selected situations. Orthodontic mini-screws instead provide temporary anchorage for tooth movement. These applications are not interchangeable.

Clarify its purpose first

Is it intended to retain a prosthesis or temporarily anchor tooth movement? The term alone does not answer that question.

02 / 03

Narrower is not automatically better

Bone, space, loading and the planned restoration must fit together. A smaller diameter does not automatically remove the need for bone augmentation or accommodate every load.

Maintenance remains essential

Small implants also need cleaning and review. Mobility, pain or bleeding needs assessment. Selection and follow-up depend on the system and individual findings.

At a glance

What is the main idea?

A particularly small implant whose exact purpose needs to be specified.

Who may be suitable?

Selected cases after planning, not everyone with limited bone.

What is involved?

Discussion of limits, an appropriate restoration, cleaning and reviews.

Often confused

Mini implant or orthodontic mini-screw?

A prosthetic mini implant may retain a restoration. An orthodontic mini-screw provides temporary anchorage for tooth movement.

Quick answers
Are mini implants always suitable for dentures?

No. One possible use is stabilising selected removable restorations. Suitability depends on factors including bone, loading and the denture.

Can they replace every missing tooth?

No universal claim is possible. Very narrow implants have different mechanical constraints and are not a substitute for every implant concept.

Is an orthodontic mini-screw the same?

No. It temporarily anchors forces used to move teeth and is not intended as a permanent replacement root supporting a prosthesis.

Which implant type could suit my findings, and what limits would a smaller diameter have?

An implant question needs the whole restoration plan.
