What is a digital impression?

An intraoral scan uses a small camera to record accessible surfaces of teeth and gums. It creates a digital model that can replace a conventional impression for suitable clinical purposes.

Surfaces are recorded digitally

A scanner is moved inside the mouth. Many optical images are combined into a three-dimensional surface model.

A model for further work

Depending on the treatment, the digital model can support planning and fabrication. It cannot provide every kind of information.

Not an X-ray into the tooth

An optical scan shows surfaces. It does not show the tooth interior, roots inside bone or hidden inflammation as X-ray imaging can.

At a glance

What does the scan record?

Optically accessible surfaces of teeth and gums.

What can the model support?

Suitable steps in planning and fabricating dental restorations or appliances.

Does it replace X-rays?

No. It does not show hidden internal structures.

Often confused

Surface model or X-ray volume?

Both can look three-dimensional but provide different information. An intraoral scan is not a CBCT scan.

Quick answers
Does an intraoral scan use X-rays?

No. An optical intraoral scan uses light to record surfaces.

Does it always replace a conventional impression?

That depends on the treatment, situation and requirements. Digital methods are not automatically the right choice in every case.

Is the model already a treatment result?

No. It is a working basis. Examination, planning and professional checks remain necessary.

What could a digital model contribute to my treatment planning?

The profile describes digital analysis as a support for individual planning.

Whether a digital impression fits the plan is considered individually.

Learning for dental trainees & teamsUnderstand clinical terms and build your knowledge

Build on the simple explanation with clinical terms, key distinctions and a knowledge question.

Optical capture
Recording accessible surfaces using light.
Digital model
A computer-based representation of the recorded shape.
Impression
Recording a shape for a model, by conventional or digital means.

Know the difference

A surface model is not an image of internal tooth or bone structure.

Knowledge questionWhat information does an intraoral scan directly provide?

This question supports learning. It does not assess personal symptoms.

  1. The shape of optically accessible tooth surfaces.
  2. The condition of the pulp inside a tooth.
  3. The bone contour behind intact oral lining.
Show answer and explanation

The shape of optically accessible tooth surfaces.

The scanner records surfaces. Hidden structures require different examinations.
