Can an implant support a tooth immediately?

Under the ITI definition, immediate loading connects an implant to a restoration in contact with the opposing arch within one week of placement. Appropriate conditions are essential. Early restoration does not mean the implant has already integrated with bone or can be loaded without restrictions.

Restoring early

Immediate loading provides early teeth with functional opposing contact. It is a defined treatment concept for selected situations.

02 / 03

Checking stability

Initial stability, bone, position and bite forces must be suitable. Final feasibility may only become clear during placement.

Healing still matters

Even with early teeth, an implant needs time to integrate. Loading instructions, hygiene and review still apply.

At a glance

What is immediate?

Early functional connection of a restoration, not completed healing.

Who is it suitable for?

Selected findings with appropriate stability and loading plans.

What should be clear first?

Requirements, risks, healing instructions and a fallback plan if early loading is unsuitable.

Often confused

Immediate restoration or immediate loading?

Early restoration out of functional contact differs from early functional loading. Neither replaces biological healing.

Quick answers
Is this the same as immediate placement?

No. Immediate placement means implant insertion on the day of extraction. Immediate loading concerns the timing of functional loading.

Is an immediately visible tooth always loaded?

No. An immediate restoration may deliberately be kept out of functional contact with the opposing arch.

Can I eat anything immediately?

No. The prescribed healing-phase instructions must be followed; the team will explain permitted loading.

At the practice

For your consultation

A question to discuss with Dr. med. dent. Niusha Barahmand Pour:

What would be required for early loading, and what would the fallback plan be?

At the practice, findings, personal wishes and possible next steps are discussed through a consultation and examination.

Earlier visible teeth should come with a clear healing plan.

Learning for dental trainees & teamsUnderstand clinical terms and build your knowledge

Build on the simple explanation with clinical terms, key distinctions and a knowledge question.

Primary stability
Mechanical stability immediately after implant placement.
Osseointegration
The biological connection between bone and implant surface during healing.
Occlusal contact
Contact with opposing teeth during biting or chewing.

Know the difference

The technical ITI time definition describes a protocol, not an individual treatment schedule or a recommendation to load every implant early.

Knowledge questionWhat does immediate loading not mean?

This question supports learning. It does not assess personal symptoms.

  1. That bone integration is already complete.
  2. That a restoration is provided early.
  3. That functional contact is intended.
Show answer and explanation

That bone integration is already complete.

Biological integration continues and must be protected.
