Does every missing tooth need its own implant?

An implant-supported bridge is a fixed restoration replacing several missing teeth. Not every replacement tooth needs an implant directly beneath it. Number, position and connections are planned according to the gap, available bone and loading.

Replacing several teeth

A bridge connects several tooth units. Implants support it; pontics between supports can replace missing teeth.

Planning the supports

Implant number cannot be determined only by counting missing teeth. Position, span and bite forces all matter.

Cleaning underneath

The bridge stays in place for daily care. Areas beneath pontics and around the gum need appropriate cleaning aids and regular checks.

At a glance

What does it include?

Implants as supports and a connected fixed restoration.

Who may it suit?

People with several missing teeth and suitable conditions.

What is involved?

Planning, placement and healing, restoration, then ongoing hygiene and maintenance.

Often confused

Implant bridge or implant overdenture?

The bridge is fixed. A denture designed to be removable can be taken out for cleaning even though implants improve retention.

Quick answers
Can I remove an implant bridge?

A fixed implant bridge is not removed by the wearer. This differs from a removable implant-supported denture.

Do adjacent teeth need preparing?

Natural adjacent teeth do not act as supports for a purely implant-supported bridge.

What if something becomes loose?

Do not wiggle it further or tighten it yourself. Arrange prompt assessment and avoid heavy loading meanwhile.

At the practice

For your consultation

A question to discuss with Dr. med. dent. Niusha Barahmand Pour:

How would I clean the bridge every day, and which support positions are appropriate?

At the practice, findings, personal wishes and possible next steps are discussed through a consultation and examination.

For several missing teeth, a plan should address support, cleaning and everyday use together.

Learning for dental trainees & teamsUnderstand clinical terms and build your knowledge

Build on the simple explanation with clinical terms, key distinctions and a knowledge question.

Pontic
A bridge unit replacing a missing tooth between or beside supports.
Abutment
A connector between the implant and prosthetic restoration.
Span
The distance bridged, which influences design.

Know the difference

A purely implant-supported bridge rests on implants. Connecting natural teeth and implants is a different construction.

Knowledge questionHow is the implant number chosen?

This question supports learning. It does not assess personal symptoms.

  1. Always one per missing tooth.
  2. Only according to desired tooth colour.
  3. Through individual planning of bone, position and loading.
Show answer and explanation

Through individual planning of bone, position and loading.

The number of missing teeth is only one part of planning.
